First Hull City of Sanctuary Football Match

On Sunday 18th November, at the University of Hull’s excellent all-weather pitch, a team made up of refugees and asylum seekers who attend Hull’s Open Doors project played the now famous Springbank Tigers – a long established team made up of mainly Kurdish refugees.

Mr Simon Foster refereed an extremely well-fought match, and although the 4-0 result (to the Tigers) was decisive, both sides played good open football.

The Open Doors team benefited from two loaned players at the start, but later gained several substitutes, including several junior players.

The Hull City of Sanctuary trophy was presented to the captain of the winning side by Peter Campion, secretary of Hull City of Sanctuary group.

This match will become an annual event.
