Join Hull in its momentous year in the spotlight as the UK City of Culture in 2017 by having a fantastic day of world music and other activities in Queen's Gardens, marking the launch of national Refugee Week and in celebration of the Great Get Together, inspired by Jo Cox MP.
 
We are extremely proud to present our main acts for this years Gig In The Gardens Roots and World music Festival includes:
      •  K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade - The 9-piece deliver infectious West African vibes from Ghana via Sheffield, with diverse origins conflating to whip up their signature heady brew of afrobeat, soul, funk and reggae otherwise dubbed “Afro-fusion”.
      • Hekima & The Bongo Flava - (SPECIAL ONE-OFF SHOW) - The Bongo Flava return for one special show due to popular demand. Tanzania via Hull, fusing african roots with rap, reggae, afro-beat and funk. - https://hekimaandthebongoflava.bandcamp.com/album/sonrise
      • Bud Sugar - 1 part ukulele, 1 part drum machine, cross it with an acoustic up funk, add powerful Codhead vocals, infuse with grime inspired bars and garnish with a touch of electronic noises and you have a description of the Bud Sugar sound, but it's hearing that will get you craving the summery, high octane vibes that they incant!
      • Rafiki Jazz - The most diverse band in the UK, a host of musicians spanning four continents with migrant & refugee artists at its heart & immense sincerity and compassion coursing through their songs.
 
Also taking part in the event will be artwork tent by Kate Daudy, a London based British artist focusing on questions of home, identity and memory.  In early 2016, thanks to the intervention of the Spanish arts organisation ONUART, Daudy was given a used UNHCR tent from Zaatari camp, in Jordan, with which to create an artwork.UNHCR organised for Daudy to visit several camps on different occasions, and she also met with activists, war-wounded, volunteers, doctors, diplomats and other aid organisations, from nearly 60 nations, asking them about their experience of the refugee crisis, and their observations about home and identity rising from it. She also asked them what, if any, lesson could be learned from their trauma and loss, that might be usefully shared through the medium of the tent.
 

Tuesday 20th June from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm UK Celebration of World Refugee Day at Hull Minster incorporating Hull's declaration as a City of Sanctuary

 With great excitement Hull Refugee Week is announcing the UK celebration of World Refugee Day in Hull on Tuesday 20th June at Hull Minster. The UK refugee sector will come together for the first time outside of London to celebrate this day in the UK City of Culture.

Hull’s declaration as a full City of Sanctuary will be made by a local refugee and will be received on behalf of the citizens of Hull by the current Lord Mayor to recognise Hull’s proud history of providing a warm welcome and a place of sanctuary to people fleeing persecution.

The event will be hosted by refugees including Busalama, a young refugee originally from Congo.
Prestigious speakers will include:

Baroness d’Souza: Lord Speaker of the House of Lords for 5 years. Hull City of Sanctuary is delighted the Baroness is speaking on this momentous day following on from our previous association with her.

Sabir Zazai, Chair of City of Sanctuary nationally. As an Afghan refugee Sabir has direct experience of what it is like to seek sanctuary and contribute successfully to a life in a new country.

Rosie Millard, Chair of Hull City of Culture, speaking about freedom and the impact of Hull City of Culture.

Nahros Zagros found sanctuary in Hull. He is now Vice President of Soran Unversity and is an amazing musician. As well as speaking he will also entrance us with his proficiency with the violin.

Additional speakers will include the Bishop of Hull, Lord Mayor of Hull, Maurice Wren (Refugee Council) and Alex Fraser (British Red Cross).

Exhibitions include work by a Hull group ‘Knitters for Peace’, Rock Against Racism posters going back to the 1970s and photographs from previous Hull Refugee Week events.

Thursday 22nd June from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Refugee Celebration at Open Doors (Prince's Avenue Methodist Church, Hull) includes United Peace Gathering, special lunch and refugee talent showcase.
